Dillon Tweedie

Tell us a little about yourself! Where are you from/where do you live? What do you like to do besides photography?
My name is Dillon Tweedie. I am a photographer currently living in Kamloops, British Columbia. I am originally from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
Haha, do people who do film photography have time for other hobbies? I like to play guitar and hang out with my wife and 2 dogs.

What’s the meaning behind your Instagram handle (@fearandloathingin35mm)?
When I was making my account I was watching Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas. I'm a huge fan of the film and Hunter S. Thompson so that's basically that's how it happened.

When did you first get into photography? When did you start shooting film?
I got into photography about a year and a half ago. I never had an interest in it until my wife brought home a film camera. I started shooting film soon after.

What kind/style of photography are you currently shooting? What style of photography do you find yourself drawn to? Is there something you would like to start shooting?
I shoot a lot of street/night photography currently. I'm starting to get into a little more portraits and I'm really interested in that side of things. Shooting people is far more challenging and intimidating so I'd like to do more of that.

What camera are you currently using the most? What’s your go-to film stock?
I usually shoot a Pentax 67 and Portra 400. I get some cool/consistent results with that combo.
What’s your dream camera?
I'll probably get a Mamiya 6 eventually. We all know that our "dream camera" is the next camera we're buying that we swear is our last.

Is there a film stock you haven’t gotten the chance to try but really want to?
Rollei Retro 80s is one I haven't tried yet that looks pretty awesome.
One camera, one film, one location for an entire year. What are they?
Pentax 67ii, Cinestill 800t, California. (what a cliché I know lol)

"This is one of my favorite shots. I woke up at like 2:30 in the morning and was headed towards Vernon, British Columbia when I could see the moon hitting the clouds in my rear-view mirror. Wasn't sure if I'd blown out that highlight but I guess you just get lucky sometimes."

We see that you shoot both digital and film, what makes you pick one over the other?
It all depends on the situation. I prefer to shoot film at night but when the exposures get over 10 seconds I'll meter with my digital camera. I honestly use my film and digital camera the same amount. Some people in the film community get a little weird when it comes to shooting digital but if you're enjoying yourself, there's nothing to worry about in my opinion.
Do you develop/scan your film yourself?
I develop/scan pretty much everything myself. Sometimes it's pretty time consuming and a pain in the ass but it's a cool skill to have and a lot cheaper, especially if you're shooting 20+ rolls a month.

Do you prefer shooting at night or during the day (and why)?
I prefer to shoot in low light. I usually get up at around 3 am to go shoot until golden hour is over. It's always quiet and there aren't too many people around. I shoot everyday before work and it's a pretty peaceful way to start the day.
We love all of your photographs, but your night photography really stands out to us. What’s a word of advice you would give someone who wants to get into night photography?
Thank you, I really appreciate that.
Don't get discouraged when you underexpose a roll or 20 haha.
Learn the reciprocity calculations for the film you're using.
Get a handheld light meter or use a digital camera to meter.

Goals for this year?
I'd love to take some trips down to the States focusing mainly on photography. Death Valley is high up on the list.
