Jarod Johannesson
Tell us a little about yourself! Where are you from/where do you live? What do you like to do besides photography?
My name is Jarod Johannesson, my friends call me JJ. I am 21 years old and currently living in Kamloops, BC. I was born and raised in Kelowna and moved to Kamloops a little over a year ago to search for something outside of the norms I was in. I am now a licensed realtor and in my spare time I enjoy mountain biking, being with my friends, and good coffee (:
When did you first get into photography in general? When did you start shooting film?
I always have felt guided to create, if it was something in the  artistic world or everyday life. I feel I never have truly stepped into the digital world, so my first days of photography were on film in the fall of 2019. I picked up my dad’s Canon AE-1 and shot a roll. Christmas 2019 I spent in Arizona and this is where I truly found my love for film. The aura surrounding each photo. The grain, the light leaks, the warmth. It all made sense for how I wanted to capture my surroundings and the feelings that came with them.
What camera are you currently using the most? What’s your go-to film stock?
I always come back to the Canon AE-1 . I can bring it on the go, change my settings, and look cool while doing it all. I usually rock a 50mm or 28mm lens depending on what I want to shoot. I always seem to fall back on Portra 400, literally never misses and is so versatile.

What’s your dream camera?
The Mamiya RZ67 is amazing.
Is there a film stock that you haven’t gotten the chance to try but would like to?
I currently have some Cinestill 800 and 50D. I have never used either but look forward to doing so. Fuji Pro 400H is one I will hopefully get my hands on one day too.

One camera, one film, one location for an entire year. What are they?
Mamiya RZ67, Portra 800, Nordic Countries - Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.
Is there anyone that has really influenced your work? Either another artist or someone outside of the photography world?
Fred Herzog has definitely inspired me. The era (50’s - 70’s ) he captured is so nostalgic and the fact that he did so much of it in Vancouver, BC allows me to feel his work much more deeply.
Any goals for 2022, photography related or not?
I want to have more genuine interactions and conversations. Everything seems so urgent in this world and so many people are trying to be something they are not, including myself sometimes. I think you need to know what is important and prioritize that. I want to understand myself and others better. I want to work on accountability and being the best version of who I am.  I am looking forward to all the learning I will continue to have and the opportunities that will approach me. I am excited for the adventures I will have and those I will get to meet along the way!
1-2 songs that you currently have on repeat.

"Me and my friends from out east hiked to Plade Lake. It was a whole day hike but definitely worth it. I dragged my Pentax 6x7 up there, I did get some photos I really enjoyed, including one of the dog on the trail. Funny enough most of my favourites came from the point and shoot I brought with me. On our way up to the trailhead our Jeep's gas light came on. This was a problem we had to solve at the end of the day on our way back to town. We drove down the mountain and there was no gas station on this side of the West Kootenays. We took the ferry across and managed to coast into a gas station that was not on our map. We barely made it, but we did! We celebrated with pizza and laughs."
"I took a trip down to Vancouver to write my Real Estate exam and to see some buddies while I shot my first roll of colour positive film. The entire weekend was a success and we had the time of our lives. "
"None of my friends believed me when I said we were going to do the crate challenge after we had gone out downtown. Some people showed up and it started pouring rain. It felt pretty cinematic and I am glad I got to capture it first hand."
